Greetings, You are invited to a mini-workshop to swap notes and build relationships around biodiversity and biosecurity data management in the Wellington region. The workshop will be held from 12:30 to 15:00 on Tuesday 9 February at Wellington Regional Council, and will include lunch. All local government, DoC, CRI, private sector and NGO people involved with biodata are invited to participate. The workshop will provide opportunities to find out what others in the region are doing, and to share ideas about systems and practices. Most importantly, however this will be a chance to build and refresh relationships that will be useful for ongoing collaboration around biodata. Oh, and did I mention lunch? I will post details of the venue as they are confirmed. In the meantime, please 1 forward this invitation to your networks, and 2 RSVP to <email obscured> cheers, Dan Randow Dataversity Facilitator
Thank you for organising the mini-workshop. Sorry I cannot participate in the workshop. Regards

This sounds great! Unfortunately I've a meeting from 2-3.30 that day. I"ll come along to the early part then sidle out the door - hopefully that won't be too disruptive. The meeting is brainstorming what a "policy" package to improve environmental data management could look like - whatever whatever combination of [wiki-policy] + [direction to FRST] + [tool-and-data-service guide] + [set of inspirational stories] we think will have the greatest behaviour-changing impact. We're having a plethora of these meetings on this topic - there are three in this week (8-12th) - and if there's anyone with some good ideas who's keen to participate I'd love to hear from you. I'm particularly keen to get more regional government people who're willing to participate! Please mail me at <email obscured> or give me a ring - (04) 917 3066. CHeers!

Hi Dan, Sorry, I cannot participate in the workshop due to clashing with my metadata tasks. Our team member - Benno who will be in the workshop knows very well about DOC's metadata project, and can explain about it. Best regards Madan

================================ 12:30 to 15:00 on Tuesday 9 February at Wellington Regional Council. Participants ------------ Owen Spearpoint, GWRC Pedro Jensen, GWRC Sara Moylan, GWRC Tim Park, GWRC Kim Duckworth, Min Fish Julian Carver, NZOR and NWDD Siobhan Browning, TFBIS Dan Randow, Dataversity Summary of Topics Addressed --------------------------- Wellington Monitoring Group Sara gave a report on the Wellington regional monitoring group that is working to develop agreed standards, and a shared platform. The group is starting with coordination of bird monitoring data. GWRC Pest Plants Database Pedro is still working on acquiring a new pest plant database. GWRC are looking at using a module from EBoP's system. Lower North Island Councils Collaborating on PDAs Pedro reported on a collaboration among several lower North Island councils to build shared systems for PDA and the recording of PDA-captured data. GWRC Monitoring Strategy Tim Park is working on a monitoring strategy for GWRC, that would provide a framework for measuring the state of biodiversity in the region. He is looking at the monitoring strategy that ARC have developed. http://dataversity.org.nz/r/topic/1QM2pdYrlyBu3Xqy1E8kqN GWRC Use of National Databases Owen Spearpoint listed several national databases that he uses, including NVS, NZBRN, and others. Owen, can you give us a list of the national databases you use and why and how you use them? Marine Biodata Management Kim gave an overview of some of the issues faced in marine biodata management. They seem pretty similar to those faced in terrestrial and freshwater biodata management. NZ Organisms Register Julian gave an update on NZOR, which will aggregate taxonomic data from various national datasets, and provide a single source where this is available to local councils. NZOR will probably bring on its first consumers this year. http://dataversity.org.nz/guide/systems/nzor/ National Weeds Distribution Database Julian gave an overview of this project, http://dataversity.org.nz/guide/systems/nwdd/ which will aggregate regional data to provide a national picture of weeds distribution. The Biosecurity Institute Pedro gave an overview of the Biosecurity Institute, and there was some discussion about how Dataversity and the Biosecurity Institute could work together. Pedro, who is on the regional exec of the Biosecurity Institute, is going to look into this. http://biosecurity.org.nz/ Dataversity Public Discussion There was some discussion about how the Dataversity public discussion group can become more of a place for conversations and news relating to local biodata initiatives as well as the more technical national level issues that tend to dominate now. National Workshop We drafted an agenda for the National Workshop, but I'll post that separately. Dataversity System Guide Dan gave a tour of the System Guide and many present were surprised to find that it existed, and that they had the ability to edit it. If you have not seen the System Guide, please check it out now. http://dataversity.org.nz/guide/ Feedback -------- Of six respondents, one agreed and five strongly agreed that the workshop was useful to them. Asked what was of most value about the workshop, participants responded as follows: Done great. Conversation. Talking biodata. The discussion on what we need to cover in the national workshop. Seeing more of what's been going on and how much is on the website. Networking. Asked how the workshop could have been improved, participants responded as follows: More participants. More people and more staying to take part in the discussions. More attendees. More time. Asked when the next workshop should be held, participants responded as follows: 3-4 Months. Yearly. 3 months. Same time next year.
