Hello, and welcome to all who have joined this group, Of the 26 people currently here, http://dataversity.org.nz/groups/dataversity_public_discuss/members only 18 are core members of Dataversity, so we this is already a group where inter-sectoral conversations can take place. If you are a core member of Dataversity, then you have probably already posted an introduction to the Dataversity Private Discussion group. That will be visible to the other core members of the group, but not to everyone in this group. You are welcome to post a separate intro to this group, but as an alternative I suggest that you visit your bio (accessible from your profile) and make sure that is up to date. Profiles are visible to members of this public group who are logged in to the site. If you are not a member of the private Dataversity group, and would like to participate in conversations here, please begin by making a post to this "topic", introducing yourself. You can do that by logging in to the website, and then visiting this topic (there's a link to it at the bottom of the email version of this post). Or you can simply reply to the email version of this post, leaving the subject line unchanged. Here is an intro from me, for the purposes of this group. I am Projects Director of OnlineGroups.Net, a company that provides online collaboration tools and services. We build the collaboration server GroupServer http://groupserver.org that underpins the Dataversity site, as well as our service at OnlineGroups.Net http://onlinegroups.net where you can start a site and online groups of your own. Our service underpins many other sites, including an online groups site for Landcare Research, http://tiakimatauranga.onlinegroups.co.nz/ and the LG OnlineGroups site http://groups.localgovt.co.nz/ that we provide for Local Government Online Ltd. We are working with LGOL on the Dataversity project. My role here is Facilitator. If this project leads to sustainable ongoing conversations that lead to better coordination of efforts around biodata management in local government, I will have done my job. I would be happy to answer any questions that you have about this group, or other aspects of Dataversity.

Hi I'm an IT Project Manager with an interest in how biodiversity management organisations manage their data. I work for a Tasmanian software company called ICS and we are involved with land and marine biodata managers across Australia and NZ, Singapore, the USA and Canada. I've set a profile - http://dataversity.org.nz/p/davido

A warm welcome to all those who have joined this group in the last month or two (there's a list below). If you have not already done so, please introduce your self to the group by replying to this email. The "Introductions" topic in this group http://dataversity.org.nz/r/topic/6E9sB6q9sUaKHps0JDdtQU is visible to the public, and if you are logged in, you can post your intro, too. Many of the new members have created profiles at the links below. Profile details are only visible to logged in members, but as posts are visible to the public you can see a list of the posts made by each person on their profile, without being logged in. I am delighted at the diversity of the membership that is developing here. This is well in line with this group's purpose — inter-sectoral engagement about NZ local government biodiversity data management. cheers, Dan Randow Dataversity Facilitator . . . Hello there, I'm the Principal Advisor, Natural Environment with Christchurch City Council. Part of my responsibilities are to oversee the implementation of Christchurch City Council''s Biodiversity Stragety (2008). Many of the actions set out in the document require access to coordinated data about the natural heritage of our area (which includes the Banks Peninsula as well as the City itself). We simply don't have easily accessible information at present. As a result, I'm starting to raise awareness about the issue within the Council (in the first instance) with a view to a coordinated and effective internal system (again in the first instance). Of course, we will be bearing in mind that our data could usefully be connected to other agencies' data - and that will definitely be part of our thinking, but we want to get our own house in order first. Whilst not being a computer tech person at all, I have been involved in the establishment of cross-agency biological and habitat data projects in Scotland, so I understand the complexity of the processes and the relationships, and the costs of setting up an effective system. As a direct result of those considerations, I suspect the Christchurch project will have a 6 to 10 year timeline. I'm interested to share ideas and experience with other LTAs which are involved in similar processes.
Hi All, The Dataversity Public Discussion group now has almost 100 members. You can check out the members list on the following page, http://dataversity.org.nz/groups/dataversity_public_discuss/members from where you can navigate to a profile for each group member. You can see the posts made by each group member on their profile, but you'll need to be logged in to see other profile information. Please take a moment to check your own profile, and make sure that the information about yourself, such as your organisation and role, are up to date. If you have not done so, please post a brief intro to this topic. She has also been working on an exciting new project… but more about that soon. Welcome aboard, Charlotte. It's great to have you here.
