Hi All, Received the request below via the New Zealand Ecological Society. Hi Vicky. Check out the Dataversity (http://dataversity.org.nz/groups/dataversity_public_discuss/) to see what we're all about. Regards, Jim L. From: NZ Ecological Society Secretariat <email obscured>] Sent: Wednesday, 2 November 2011 9:48 a.m. To: NZ Ecological Society Secretariat Subject: Marine environment time-series data sets - can you help Greetings, We are presently involved in a project that seeks to build an online meta database containing high level information (mainly sampling details) about time-series data that has been, or is the process of being, collected from New Zealand's marine environment. The marine environment as defined here runs from estuaries out to the edge of the EEZ and encompasses both sediment and water. We are interested in collecting information about sampling involving biological, physical or chemical variables, and we define a time series as the same variable(s) measured (or intended to be measured) in the same way in the same location(s) on 2 or more occasions, over at least a 5 year time period. The meta database project is seen as the first step towards developing a national marine monitoring network and is funded by MAF Fisheries (see Section 3 of the attached file for an introduction to the project). Thus, the type of information we want to hold in the meta database would be sampling details (what variables, collected when, where and how, owner, level of quality assurance and where any resulting reports may be accessed). If you do not own/hold such data, but would be interested in using such a database, you may still be interested in answering questions in Section 2 of the attached file. If you do own/hold such data, regardless of whether you are interested in allowing high level information about your data to be held in an online meta database, we would really appreciate your taking the few minutes needed to answer the 10 (mainly y/n) questions in Section 1 of the attached file. In Section 1.9 you can indicate whether you wish information about your data to be included in any online meta database or not. If you own/hold multiple datasets, you can either repeat section 1 for each dataset or merely note in the comment section at the end that this is the case. In this case we will contact you to work out the easiest way to obtain the relevant information from you. We would appreciate receiving responses within 3 weeks. Hi James, Nice to know that one more metadata database is going to be built. Earlier, Department of Conservation has launched a biodiversity project metadata database, i.e. www.doc.govt.nz/biodiversityprojects This database can host biodiversity projects of two major ecosystems: terrestrial and aquatic (includes all: marine, freshwater and wetlands), and the database also meets standards of short, long and repeated measure monitoring at the same location, of the same species or of the same individual over time. This metadata was funded by TFBIS I led the above metadata project from its day-first, i.e. business case development, project planning, user requirements and business analysis, database development and management. If you want any help on the proposed marine database, I am more than happy to share my experiences and would like to be part of it.
