Hi All, The 2010 National Dataversity workshop will be Thursday 18 and Friday 19 March 2010 at the Brentwood Hotel, Wellington. (Please note that the dates are slightly different from the ones I suggested earlier.) Please mark this in your diary, book your travel and let me know your suggestions for presentations. Dan . . . 2010 DATAVERSITY NATIONAL BIODATA MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP 0900 Thursday 18 to 1600 Friday 19 March 2010, Brentwood Hotel, Wellington. http://brentwoodhotel.co.nz The workshop will focus on systems and practices for managing biodiversity-related data. It will provide opportunities to build relationships, build awareness of what is going on, and to find opportunities to improve systems and practices, in your organisation, and between organisations nationally and globally. FEEDBACK FROM THE 2009 WORKSHOP In the feedback from last year's workshop, around half of the participants reported that the most valuable aspect of the workshop was the relationships they built, through both formal and informal conversations. These conversations, and the insight gained into each others' systems and challenges “revived [their] inspiration” and provided opportunities to “communicate and work together to achieve common goals in biodiversity management”. Some workshop participants reported that they gained ideas that they planned to incorporate into their work. Others gained opportunities to obtain tools, at low or not cost. Others reported that they saw opportunities such as to “contribute to general discussions and debates about common standards and classifications” and to collaborate “with other councils and DoC on biodiversity data collection, sharing, management, etc – very exciting”. INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE Those who are involved in areas that are relevant to NZ local government biodiversity data management, are invited to participate. This particularly includes people who manage biodiversity databases in local government, central government, CRIs and other agencies. CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS The programme for the workshop is yet to be finalised but will certainly include a session on Web-based Community Environmental Monitoring. Organisations who are active in biodata management are encouraged to present at the workshop. If you would like to present, please contact <email obscured> with a brief outline of your session. Alternatively, if you would like to see a particular topic addressed at the workshop, but do not want to present, please let <email obscured> know about that, too. REGISTRATION To register, please contact Dan Randow, Dataversity Coordinator 03-377-5377, <email obscured>. To book accommodation at the Brentwood, please contact Souvaly Sharp, 04 920 7317, <email obscured>.
Below is a link to a form for booking accommodation at the Brentwood.

One of the useful outcomes from the two recent mini-workshops was much input into a draft agenda for the National Biodata Workshop, which is 0900 Thursday 18 to 1600 Friday 19 March 2010, Brentwood Hotel, Wellington. http://brentwoodhotel.co.nz Please RSVP to me if you have not done so already. And please give me feedback about what you want to hear about and discuss at this workshop. One message that came through clearly is to keep a focus on real world, practical application of the systems and practices we are discussing. Here is the draft list of topics: ARC's Regional Monitoring Strategy and Data Management DoC: NHMS, Bioweb and Metadata Database Wellington's Monitoring Group and Data Management Environment Bay of Plenty's Biodiversity Application MfE: LUCAS, LCDB and SoE Reporting NZ Organisms Register National Weeds Distribution Database MRST: Science Backbone update National Infrastructure: What is needed? Hi Dan, This looks like a great agenda and I would like to come along. If you wanted, I could give a talk on a marine biodiversity repository that we are slowly devloping. An early prototype is at benthic.dragonfly.co.nz

Hi Dan I'm intending to be at the workshop, however I may not be able to attend on Thursday.
Cheers Jim
Hi All I thought I'd post this here as it's a national call-out... This coming year MoRST wants to take some steps that will make a tangible improvement in how New Zealand's publicly-funded environmental data are managed, so we can start to see them more easily discovered, accessed and re-used. There are a lot of good tools and policy initiatives out there, and after a few years of thinking, talking and writing MoRST has done some of its own. The "principles" for managing environmental data are now on the web, and Helen Anderson has written to the CRIs' CEs to draw their attention to the fact. The Foundation for RS&T's Backbone process for the Nationally Significant Databases is rolling on steadily, and enthusiasm for the notion of accessing and reusing (publicly-funded) data is being expressed by much more influential politicians than has ever been the case. (see below - hopefully you've seen all these before). MoRST now wants to build on this and do something that actually sees people change their behaviour. We have committed in our Statement of Intent this year to creating a "policy statement" that sets a clearer and stronger direction for management of publicly-funded environmental data. However we realise that Vote: RS&T is only one of the streams of public funding being transformed into the environmental data and research that need to be better-managed. MoRST wants our "policy statement" to be helpful also to all the other agencies and bodies involved in the "ecosystem" of environmental research and data. A key point is that we are sure the most helpful set of initiatives won't look much (if at all) like a traditional "policy statement". I'll upload the background material "Preparatory material for MoRST's brainstorming sessions on environmental data policy statement" to the files here - please have a look to see what we're trying to do. We are now having a series of meetings with key people around the country, to "brainstorm" what a useful [policy statement] would look like. We are entirely open to whatever combination of [wiki-policy] + [direction to FRST] + [tool-and-data-service guide] + [set of inspirational stories] will have the greatest behaviour-changing impact. We are having a series of these brainstorm meetings so that each one is small enough for us to have a free-flowing brainstorm discussion, and we provide afternoon tea for those in Wellington (and afternoon tea noises for those phoning in). Let me know if you're interested in participating - either by phone or in person - by emailing <email obscured> and I'll arrange some meeting times.
Cheers! Isabella

Hi All, Many thanks to those who attended the workshop. We certainly had a busy two days, with around 28 presentations, 12 work sessions and a debate. For those who did not make it, and those who would like to look over some sessions again, audio, video and slides from the presentations, and reports back from the work sessions, and a report on the whole workshop, will all be posted on the Dataversity website. For now, below are links to some photos from the event. Here, also, is Julian's shot of me introducing the workshop http://twitpic.com/196qw7 and of some of us making a meatspace map of New Zealand, http://twitpic.com/196u39 in the intro session.

Hi Andrew, > its all gone very quiet. How is posting the information coming along? Good question! Work is still in progress on the video and work session notes from the workshop, but the following page now contains audio files and slides from most presentations, as well as some video. http://dataversity.org.nz/about/workshops/national_workshop_2010/ The video files are rather large. We are working on smaller versions. All feedback will be welcomed.

Hi All, With huge thanks to Charlotte, presentation slides, audio, video and the work session notes from the workshop are now available on the Dataversity website. http://dataversity.org.nz/about/workshops/national_workshop_2010/ That page also contains a list of participants, and a summary of the feedback from participants. Some of the video quality is variable. If you are interested in the videos, but can not get what you want from the versions we've posted, I will post them to you on a DVD. Please contact me directly, if you would like that. The workshop notes are unedited copies of what was written on the flipcharts at the workshop. Some of them look rather cryptic, out of context. If you were a workshop facilitator, could you please check the notes from your workshop, and edit them to make them a bit more readable. Post the edited versions up to the discussion group.

For a little inspiration, I can recommend the Dataversity workshop videos on YouTube. http://www.youtube.com/user/dataversity Here, for example is the feedback session at the end of the Workshop, where we collected stories about the benefits people are gaining from Dataversity (it's in three parts). The full report from the workshop is also worth a browse, as it has the presentations, notes, audio and video. http://dataversity.org.nz/about/workshops/national_workshop_2010/
