The 2008 NZ Ecological Society conference "Ecology on our Doorstep" is in Auckland from 29 September to 2 October. As a number of Dataversity members will be at that conference, it presents a good opportunity to meet up. The conference programme is no doubt full, but perhaps there's a chance to meet during one of the breaks, even if it is just to put faces to names. If you are going to be there, and are interested in meeting up, please reply to this post. Please also indicate if you'd be willing to help organise a meeting by helping to pick a time and place, and providing some facilitation on the day.

Hiya, Well spotted, Dan! I have been in touch with the conference organisers and they have space for us to have a lunchtime get-together. I was thinking that Thursday lunchtime would be perfect (I'm presenting ARC Ecobase at 2:50 on Thursday). I'll put a notice up on the board (rego desk) on Thursday with the room details, and we'll take it from there. Bring any ideas / items for discussion! Let me know if you are not attending Thursday, and we can reschedule (though I'll have to pass on the facilitation baton to another member). Otherwise, see you Thursday.

Hi, A selection of the Dataversity community met at EcoSoc on the 2nd October. Great conference, interesting presentations! Thanks to all who made the effort to catch up (Frances Schmechel, Ryan Clark, Yanbin Deng, Matt Baber, Shay Dean, James Lambie, Nikki MacArthur, Nicolas Martin, Owen Spearpoint, and myself), and a potential new member also (Emily Roper, Akl CC), who recognises a great forum when they see one. Following introductions, a short and very informal lunchtime discussion ensued, regarding data quality, regional / national database aggregation, DoCs BioWeb / NIMS, to name a few. Another topic was the lack of inter-council leadership and cohesion with respect to Biodiversity data (Frances). The BioSecurity Managers Group, and the Resource Managers Group were identified as forums to guide or supply direction, with both groups composed of persons in decision-making roles (James). Now may be a great time to specify requirements for inter-council Biodiversity info sharing, due to the Regional Policy Statement review (Matt). I hope I haven't missed anything. Please feel free to add additional comments. thx, mike
Hi Mike, Thanks for covering this. Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend. I support the idea of strengthening the inter-council leadership and cohesion generally and Biodiversity data is a good place to continue this. I don't know much about the BioSecurity Managers Group, but certainly the Resource Managers Group is an influential forum with many of these members standing in for their CEOs (when needed) at the collective Regional Councils CEO Forum and at the Regional Affairs Committee (were the 16 Regional Chairs and CEOs meet). The engagement across the 75(?) Territorial Authorities (Cities and Districts) is a bit more of a challenge. I think they usually separate into the Metros and others. An alternative structure is engagement via Regional clusters. Examples of this are the ALGGi group in Auckland where the Auckland Council GIS people coordinate around Geospatial data initiatives. A similar group in the Waikato is WaiGIS, that includes not only the Waikato Council people but others from industry and other organisations in the Waikato. I understand that similar initiatives are underway in the Manawatu - Wanganui Region, in the Bay of Plenty and in Wellington. What were the thoughts around leveraging the Regional Policy Statement review? Is this a purely Auckland opportunity or might it have more general / widespread application? Another, opportunity that is shaping up is collective Council engagement around the renewal of the LCDB (land Cover Database). MfE is starting to consider this as part of LUCAS, but I think it has wider application. It could be advantageous to get the collective Councils thinking about this, perhaps via Dataversity? Any comments or suggestions?
