Data standards enable diverse systems to use consistently describe the entities that they relate to.

This practice area is maintained by Dan Randow.

Checklists

Level Two: Internally developed standard

  • Metadata was determined internally.
  • Documentation of the metadata scheme is readily discoverable.

Level Three: Authoritative Standard Imported Once

  • Metadata sourced from authoritative source such as Landcare Research.
  • Documentation of metadata source and date it was obtained is readily discoverable.

Level Four: Authoritative Standard Imported Periodically

  • Metadata is updated on a schedule.
  • Documentation of metadata update history is readily discoverable.

Level Five: Metadata Automatically Synchronised with Authoritative Standard

  • Metadata is automatically sychnronised.
  • Sychronisation logs are readily discoverable.

Taxonomic Metatada

The New Zealand Organisms Register (NZOR) is a project working to create an accurate, authoritative, comprehensive and continuously updated catalogue of taxonomic names of all New Zealand biota and other taxa of importance to New Zealand.

They describe the problem of inaccurate or ambiguous taxomonic metadata as follows:

All biodiversity information systems use the names of organisms as a fundamental identifier.
Names come in a variety of forms. For example they may be Latin names, vernacular (common) names, ‘tag’ names adopted due the lack of formal scientific names, or the trade names applied to cultivated plants. Whatever their form, these names provide the essential vocabulary by which we discover, index, manage, and share information relating to biodiversity.
Access to an authoritative and up to date list of names and their relationships to currently accepted taxa is critical to effective information management and decision making across the conservation, biosecurity, and biotechnology sectors.

NZOR has produced a document explaining the issues around taxonomic metadata in New Zealand.

ANZLIC

The Australia & New Zealand Spatial Information Council (ANZLIC) provide leadership in the collection, management and use of spatial information in Australasia, in order to facilitate easy and cost effective access to the wealth of spatial data and services provided by a wide range of organisations in the public and private sectors.
